Block No. 5 is a six-story skeleton in the heart of the capital. Since a crane collapse in 2016, the building has been stripped to its bones—looted of wires, pipes, and dignity. Today, it is a labyrinth of bare concrete adorned only by the graffiti of the "marginals" who call this post-apocalyptic ruin home. Behind fragile doors made of discarded cloth, a gang of outcasts has established a surreal condominium. By day, they fight a "trench warfare" against their invisible enemy: hunger. By night, the building exhales life. While girls braid hair and pick lice from the younger ones, the boys gather around "Don’t Get Angry"—a popular Angolan game played with bottle caps on stained fabric. High-stakes bets and heated reactions provide a fleeting, addictive escape. As marijuana smoke—their ritualistic hunger suppressant and malaria balm—drifts through the halls, a communal meal of stolen rice and chicken is shared from plastic scraps. Yet, danger is omnipresent. Stagnant water breeds the mosquitoes that make Angola a global epicenter for malaria, while police raids force the gang to vanish into the building’s maze. These youths share a common trauma: they fled abusive homes, brutal correctional facilities, or the cycles of sexual violence. For the girls, motherhood often meant painful abandonment. Ironically, they feel safer in these doorless rooms than in the "civilized" world. The constant threats of sickness, starvation, and arrest cannot strip them of their most prized possession: freedom. It is not the freedom of whim, but the hard-won liberty to escape mistreatment. They have chosen to pay the steep price of living on the margins. They wear the label "marginal" with a defiant pride, having decided that even a life in the shadows is better than the "freedom" offered by a society that only ever gave them scars.
