“Intrusion” examines the moment when an ordered visual field is disrupted by the unexpected presence of a figurative element. A structured background of horizontal lines and soft gradients establishes a stable, almost abstract environment. This visual order is interrupted by the partial emergence of a sculptural form—a bronze depiction of Pan by Christophe Charbonnel —entering the frame from the right. The work explores the tension between abstraction and representation. While the background tends toward a minimal, non-referential field, the sculpture introduces a distinct material and symbolic presence. Its textured surface and organic contours contrast with the smooth, repetitive structure behind it, creating a point of friction within the composition. Light plays a central role in mediating this encounter. It both integrates and separates the elements: the sculpture is partially absorbed into shadow, while highlights reveal its physicality and weight. At the same time, the background lines remain soft and diffused, reinforcing their abstract character. This duality prevents a clear hierarchy from forming, leaving the relationship between elements open. The title “Intrusion” reflects this ambiguity. The sculptural form may be read as entering the field, but it also appears as if the structured environment itself is closing in around it. The image does not resolve this tension, instead holding both interpretations in balance. Captured in-camera, the photograph relies on the precise alignment of light, surface, and form. The resulting image operates between still life, abstraction, and spatial study, inviting the viewer to consider how distinct visual languages coexist and interfere within a single frame.
