The smoke does not know whether it is arriving or departing, and neither does she. Kneeling at a mantlepiece crowded with forgotten instruments—a brass scale, an iron birdcage, an oval mirror that reflects nothing recognizable—she holds a dried stem with the reverence of someone handling things almost gone. The flowers emerge from the white fog like memories surfacing. She looks past the frame at something the photograph was not wide enough to contain.
