The session started slow at Pipeline, it seemed like all of the right swell ingredients were there but they weren’t coming together. When Anthony Walsh took off on this wave it was the first ride I saw that made the reef work. From my perspective, it started out deceptively normal-looking. He almost lost his balance at the bottom but regained his stance just in time as the wave hit the shallowest part of the reef and morphed into what I shot. Waves never look as incredible in the shot as they do when you’re sitting in front of them, but I don’t feel that way about this image.
