Last July, I went to Essaouira, in Morocco. It was my first time on the African continent. I knew how rich this country was with its colors, smells, people, culture, shadows that shape the sand and its wind that makes it dance. I knew I would live something I had never experienced before; be a witness of situations I had never been a part of before and capture through my lens a light that only belongs to this area of the planet. But I was not expecting that kind of magic. What enchanted me the most in Essaouira is the sun and the kids. The sand reflects the light and makes the clouds evaporate, so it almost never rains during July. I heard about it, but nothing can tell as much as the eyes. It makes this place so welcoming and warm, so generous and pure, so energizing. It’s so fulfilling to see that you don’t need anything superficial to truly be happy and to make an instant unique and full of joy. That’s what I tried to capture with my camera. I walked by the rampart and the beaches and just let my vision do its work. Once the kids saw me from a far, they invited me to play soccer with them. We connected without any words, only with our feet, under the same sun. I’ll remember those moments for the rest of my life and that’s why I though relevant to share this little series with you. Those frames really get me emotional. I hope they’ll bring a bit of that natural light to those who watch and bring back the audience to a time that passes way to fast, to a time where youth and nature defines wealth.
