Country / Region:
A series of images studying the incredible rock formations of the American Southwest and specifically encompassing the Navajo Nation. This region is geologically defined by the Colorado Plateau comprising a series of tablelands located within an immense natural basin surrounded by highlands. Stream valleys that are typically narrow and widely spaced dissect the region, as do larger valleys, including many spectacular and famous canyons. These ancient mountains, plateaus and buttes (the mean elevation is over 6000ft above sea level) were created from water, wind and volcanic activity moulded over millions of years - and in doing so created a rich diversity of spectacular rock formations and patterns.
