I was born and raised in Brazil. Throughout my whole life I was surrounded by Brazilian music and its folklore; it is the strongest affair I have with my homeland culture. These songs talk about the relationship between the fisherman and the sea and all its dangers. They talk about the calmness and dullness of the cowboys of sertão – a hinterland of Brazil. Moreover, they talk about the importance of being open and brave in order to love, and how painful that path will be. All of these stories kept lingering in my head my entire life, but it was only when I left Brazil that I understood their importance for my human-hood. The displacement of leaving my homeland to try to create a new life somewhere else made me realize how much all of that folklore stained my soul. Specially my lyric one. “The Sea Has No Hair That We Can Grab Onto” is a project that talks about this exploration of a transition between two worlds. Leaving the land behind doesn’t mean leaving the culture as well.
