Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the most influential women of the Middle Ages. She was Duchess of Aquitaine, first Queen of France by marriage, then Queen of England and mother of Richard the Lionheart. She was a courageous and determined personality who did not let the expectations of her time for women get her down. For example, she herself took part in the Second Crusade alongside her husband King Louis VII. In this interpretation, she is shown in a humble posture because the crusade was not successful. Her chapped lips are a reminder of the hardships of the crusade, which lasted three years.
