Don José is a sculptor of clay who looks like a Zapatista or revolutionary without being one. He was born more than 75 years ago, and he became blind when he was 55 years ago. He learned to sculpt with the hands of his soul, accompanied by Teresita, his wife, confidant, and assistant. Both have built a place where joy reigns and a multitude of clay figurines that are part of their family in the outskirts of the city of Oaxaca. Don José y Teresita work tirelessly guided by their faith, their Zapoteca culture, the family support and the hands and soul that guide his blind eyes. This photo documentary explores the life of a family profoundly touched by misfortune. With determination, faith, and strong family bonds, they overcame adversity through artistic expression. To do this, they used their intuition, artistic magic and the finesse of fingers and hands that became eyes and guides. This is a visual study of the "Manos que Ven" workshop. A panoramic view of the place, the entourage of the house, the husband and wife, and their abundant creation, showcasing tools, materials, and sculptures in various stages of completion. It is a story of a daily resilience and artistic creation that is presented through the unique singularity and beauty of the pieces created. It is a sanctuary of hope and artistry. The heart of this story lies in the daily life of Don José and Teresita, whose collaboration brings their artistic vision to life. Their relationship is a testament to love and unity in the face of challenges. The sculptures embody the Zapoteca cosmovision, connecting past and present through art. They serve as a bridge between generations, preserving the essence of their cultural identity. Ancestral customs, the clothing and colors that materialize in women and children shapes, mermaids’ representations, tress and different vegetation and mythic animals.
