Traces of the City - Evolving Movements

"Traces of the City – Evolving Movements" captures the transformation of a regional city in Japan through an abstract visual approach. Niigata, once a vibrant place full of young people, now faces a steady decline in its younger population. At the same time, urban development continues. New buildings rise, infrastructure expands, and the city appears to be modernizing. Yet beneath the surface, a quiet sense of absence lingers. As I walk through these streets, I feel a mix of familiarity and distance. The city is changing, but it is unclear who the changes are for. The contrast between physical renewal and social decline creates a subtle unease. Still, there is a sense of hope in the light, the rhythm of movement, and the occasional figures who appear, even if only momentarily. These moments are fleeting, yet meaningful. To express this emotional complexity, I used Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) as my technique. Through long exposure and controlled motion, I blurred the lines between people and architecture, creating layered impressions rather than clear records. The resulting image is not a literal depiction of the city but an emotional interpretation of its current state. Shapes become memories, and shadows suggest both presence and absence. This work reflects not only Niigata but many regional cities facing similar transitions. As places evolve, something is always gained, and something else is lost. This piece invites viewers to reflect on the traces we leave behind as our surroundings continue to shift. In the end, this project is a personal observation of time, memory, and change. It is a visual meditation on how a city can feel familiar and foreign at once, and how photography can help us explore these complex emotions in a rapidly changing world.
