Dust and Devotion

Dust and Devotion is a visual record of a working day at Cottonwood Ranch, where movement, care, and commitment unfold side by side. I photographed this series while riding alongside the crew, moving through open range, water crossings, and long stretches of sage and grass as horses and riders carried out the quiet, physical work of ranch life. The images move between speed and stillness. In one moment, a horse runs full out, dog at its heels, dust blurring the edges of the frame. In another, a rider pauses with their horse, heads lowered together, reins loose, the work briefly set aside. I was drawn to these transitions—the way intensity gives way to calm, and how trust is evident not only in action, but in rest. Details matter here: worn leather resting against a tree, water splashing at a crossing, sunlight catching a mane at dusk. These elements aren’t decorative; they are evidence of repetition, skill, and care built over time. The devotion in this series is not sentimental. It is practical, earned, and mutual—between rider and horse, people and land, effort and outcome. I chose to photograph much of this work from within it, allowing motion blur, dust, and shifting light to remain part of the story. Clarity isn’t always clean, and I wanted the images to reflect the physical reality of the day rather than polish it away. The landscape is not a backdrop but an active presence, shaping how the work is done and how the horses move through it. Dust and Devotion is about what sustains this way of life: consistency, attention, and respect. It honors the unseen hours and the everyday acts that hold a working partnership together, long after the dust settles and the light fades.
