Shooting kiteboarding is exhilarating. One day you’re in a turquoise tropical lagoon; the next, you’re knee-deep in churning grey water with 60-knot gusts slamming your face. It’s a sport defined by unpredictability and scale—both a challenge and a gift for a photographer. What sets kiteboarding apart is its diversity. Each discipline—freestyle, big air, wave riding, park, and foil—carries its own aesthetic and energy. Freestyle is raw and explosive; big air is monumental and dramatic; wave riding is fluid and cinematic. As a photographer, you’re not just documenting action—you’re translating emotion, style, and environment into a single frame. I grew up shooting skateboarding, and that background strongly shapes how I approach kiteboarding photography. In skate culture, there’s a deep partnership between rider and photographer: scouting spots together, planning the trick, waiting for the right moment. That mindset carries over to kiteboarding, with one major difference—the wind gives us freedom. You can shift the action, move a trick a few meters for a cleaner background, or line it up perfectly with the sun. Unlike surfing, you’re not locked to a single break. Skateboarding also taught me to embrace artificial light. Flash is essential in skate photography, and I brought that approach to the water. Using floating platforms and powerful battery-powered strobes, I began lighting kiteboarding in ways that felt new. In full daylight, strobes might seem counterintuitive, but when used right, they transform documentation into visual poetry. Spray becomes a halo, the kite tears through the sky, and the rider is etched into the frame. Growing up in Brazil, I’ve experienced world-class wind—especially in the northeast—but also harsh equatorial light. Strobes give me control, turning flat midday sun into drama. For me, kiteboarding photography isn’t just about tricks. It’s about sculpting chaos into something intentional—riding the wind, frozen in time.
