Titled "A Symbiosis of Myth and Reality," this image captures a profound moment of connection in the waters off Notojima, Ishikawa, Japan. The island is home to a resident population of around twenty Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, yet a brief encounter is never guaranteed. This photograph is the culmination of a day-long, persistent search. It was not until the final moments before concluding our efforts that a large pod appeared, allowing this fleeting, magical instant of shared swimming to be frozen in time. The central composition explores the union of two distinct worlds. The wild dolphins represent the vibrant reality of our natural oceans, while the diving mermaid, with her flowing tail, embodies the deep-seated human myths that have connected us to the sea for millennia. As both a PADI Mermaid Instructor and an underwater photographer, I created this piece to ask a visual question: Can we find a modern symbiosis where our myths and our current reality—the urgent need for marine conservation—harmonize for the future of our blue planet? This image is not just a fantasy; it is a hopeful, documented moment of co-existence.
