Baptism of Fire In Yanshuei, Taiwan, a centuries-old ritual transforms the night into a visceral storm of sparks. Born from a 19th-century plea to end a devastating plague, the Beehive Fireworks Festival remains a fierce spiritual baptism. Devotees, armored in heavy protective gear, stand firm against a relentless barrage of thousands of rockets. This series documents the raw intersection of ancient faith and physical endurance. To capture the full intensity of this rite, I utilized a Fujifilm XF 8mm f/3.5 R WR ultra-wide lens. This technical choice demanded extreme proximity; to fill the frame, I had to immerse myself—and my gear—directly into the trajectory of the sparks. Shooting so close required a fusion of physical courage and creative conviction. By standing just inches away from the chaos, I sought to bridge the gap between observer and devotee, bringing the viewer into the blinding heart of the "beehive." Here, amidst the haze of gunpowder, fire is no longer a peril, but a sacred medium for purification and blessing.
