Shiko

Inside a sumo stable, a wrestler performs shiko — the ancient leg-lifting exercise that is among the first things a young rikishi learns and the last thing a retiring champion gives up. His feet press into the sand, his hands grip his thighs, sweat and grit coat his skin, and gold tape wraps his wrists and ankles where the work has already taken its toll. Behind him, other wrestlers stand or stretch in various states of readiness, none of them watching, because there is nothing unusual about this moment. That is precisely what makes it remarkable.
