The Red Shadows of Longgang: Silver Bells Amidst the Scent of Rice Noodles In the early morning of Zhongli's Longgang district, the air was filled with the subtle, sweet aroma of steaming rice milk. It was the most vibrant day of the year: the Longgang Rice Noodle Festival. Xiao-Ya stood before the mirror, carefully adjusting her vibrant red headscarf. The ethnic costume she wore was adorned with intricate embroidery on the chest and sleeves, each stitch whispering stories of distant mountain peaks. It was her first time representing her community in the opening performance, and the bold "2026" displayed on the backdrop filled her with a mix of excitement and nervous energy. As the music began, Xiao-Ya and her companions stepped onto the stage with rhythmic grace, mirroring the scene captured in the image. She raised her arms, her gestures light and fluid, while her red skirts blossomed in the air like flames dancing on the streets of Longgang. The silver bells on her lapels jingled crisply with every movement, a bright sound that seemed to harmonize with the cheers of the festival-goers. For Xiao-Ya, this festival was about more than just food and performance; it was the continuation of a family legacy. Her great-grandmother had traveled from the borderlands of Yunnan and Burma to Taiwan, bringing with her the craft of making rice noodles and these fiery red garments. As she spun and leaped, Xiao-Ya caught her mother’s encouraging gaze in the crowd. In that moment, she realized she wasn't just wearing a beautiful costume—she was wearing a crimson thread connecting the past to the future. The drums of Longgang beat on, ensuring that this passion, which had traveled thousands of miles, would never stop dancing.
