Noses Up

This image was made while in a Zodiac in Scoresby Sound, Greenland. We were enjoying the scale of the fjord and a nearby waterfall when the radio call came through. “PB on the rocks.” I envisioned them in the distance. Instead, we found a mother polar bear resting on dark volcanic stone with two cubs beside her, calm after feeding on a kill and quietly observing their surroundings. The contrast struck me immediately. The clean white of the bears against the deep, weathered rock felt graphic and powerful. Soft fur against ancient stone. I was using my Z 9. with 600mmf4 with 1.4 built-in converter at 840mm. Being at that distance from the bears, the landscape carries as much meaning as the subjects themselves. With handholding the long lens and being in a moving boat, I used 1/2000 f5.6 with ISO 1600 - I exposed for the bears which darkened the volcanic rock. Momma bear stood and lifted her nose to scent the air. Another bear was approaching, drawn by the smell of the kill from likely far away. At first, I feared it was a large male. It turned out to be another female. The mother began moving her cubs away, stopping often to assess. They were calm, Each pause was echoed by the cubs. Each lifted nose copied exactly. One of the cubs stepped out of my frame but the other stood in perfect unison with its mother. The emotional impact of the image comes from that quiet alignment. Awareness without panic. Teaching without sound. The bears are small within the frame, yet grounded and assured. It is a moment of learning and protection set against a raw, uncompromising landscape.
